Currently, we are immersed in an unprecedented adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI), a tool that has come to stay and transforms our productivity, but which requires conscious and responsible use. The Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) has recently become very aware of this new scenario and is focusing a lot on generating guides and recommendations to ensure that technological innovation does not compromise the security of our information.
Thus, it has just published a document entitled “Be Careful What You Trust”, which includes advice for the safe, responsible and conscious use of AI. It highlights the importance of knowing and being able to avoid risks to people's privacy.
The first fundamental pillar for safe interaction is extreme caution with the data we provide to these systems. Any personal data, such as full names, addresses, telephone numbers or images, runs the risk of being indexed by search engines or leaked on the web in an unwanted way. To obtain useful answers without exposing our identity, it is advisable to pose situations based on fictitious cases that avoid any identifying details. This caution must be strictly applied to particularly sensitive information, such as medical data, financial details or geolocation records, which should never be shared with an AI.
In the professional environment, respect for the privacy of third parties and corporate confidentiality is essential. If AI is used in the workplace, it is necessary to strictly follow the organization's security policies and avoid including contracts, reports or strategies that reveal trade secrets or customer data. Likewise, using other people's images to generate new content can lead to serious violations or even criminal liability. It is important to remember that, in addition to the text we send, platforms collect metadata, IP addresses and usage data that define our profile.
To minimize risks, it is advisable to use email accounts that are not linked to our personal or professional identity and check whether the service allows us to delete our conversation history frequently. Finally, we must always maintain a critical stance: AI can offer convincing but erroneous answers, since it does not have the capacity for empathy or real understanding of complex personal situations. When faced with issues that require specialized diagnosis or emotional support, professional human advice must always prevail over any algorithm. Acting under these principles is not only a matter of regulatory compliance, but a commitment to ethics and business excellence.
